Empowering rural communities in Tanzania to improve health outcomes since 2005

HAT Mission Statement

Only 57% of Tanzanian people have access to clean water

Unicef

This means many people, mostly women and girls, need to travel a significant distance to collect water for survival. Not only does this travel time affect children’s education and parent’s working hours but the water often carries diseases due to improper facilities.

Only 30% of Tanzanian people have access to proper sanitation facilities

Unicef

Simple hygiene such as washing hands with soapy water can prevent diseases such as diarrhoea by 50%. Proper access to sanitation facilities can also greatly reduce the cost of health care. Communities in rural areas of Tanzania are most affected and urgently need help.

Rural areas in particular remain generally very poor, with around one third of the rural population classified as living below the poverty line
